Sacramento Airport - All Information on Sacramento International Airport (SMF)

Sacramento International Airport is the main gateway to the State Capitol of California and its surrounding areas. It is located 10.5 mi/16.9 km northwest of downtown Sacramento in Sacramento County.

The IATA code is SMF and the ICAO code is KSMF and the airport is owned by the County of Sacramento and operated by Sacramento County Airport System and the airport is self-supporting through user fees and rentals with no local, state or federal tax funds going into its operation costs.

The airport opened in October, 1967, at that time it was called Sacramento Metropolitan Airport, and it served five airlines; Pacific Air Lines, Pacific Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, Western Airlines and West Coast Airlines. One runway on the west side of the airfield, Sacramento Metropolitan Field, was in operation at this time. The airport was the first airport built for public use west of the Mississippi at the time of its opening.

The east runway opened in 1987 and more airlines joined the carriers already operating at the airport.

Terminal A and the rental car facility opened in 1998, with the rental car facility being the first of its kind in the US giving the rental car customers one single point of access, easily accessed through a single shuttle ride, helping to reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality as well as improving and enhancing the travelers’ experience.

As Terminal A opened the airport changed its name to the current Sacramento International Airport although international flights didn’t actually begin until 2002 with Mexicana’s nonstop flights to Guadalajara.

In 2008 several airlines discontinued their flights due to the nation’s economy, including international flights with Mexicana and Air Canada.

Terminal B was opened in 2011 and that year the airport carried an estimated 9 million passengers.

The airport’s two runways are almost exactly the same length and made of concrete and they run parallel on each side of the airport, one to the west and one to the east. One is 8,605 ft/2,623 m while the other is 8,600 ft/2,621 m. The west runway was resurfaced from asphalt to concrete in 2019.

The two terminals, Terminal A and Terminal B, have a total of 32 gates, 13 in Terminal A and 19 in Terminal B with 9 airlines operating from Terminal B and 4 from Terminal A. The airport saw its busiest year in 2019 with 13,172,840 passengers coming through while 2020 saw 5,583,052, the decrease being due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
